Comic Review: Mars

Summary
Title: Mars
Creator: Fuyumi Soroyo
Publisher: Tokyopop
# books in series: 15 with one prequel oneshot
Status: Completed
Genre: Romance

Plot
(from wikipedia)
It follows the relationship of a disliked teenage romance between Kira Aso, an introverted artist, and Rei Kashino, a troubled playboy who is a professional motorcycle racer.

Kira Aso and Rei Kashino meet when Rei asks Kira for directions to a local hospital one day in the park, but instead of telling him the directions she draws him a map and hands it to him without saying a word. On the back of the directions is a picture Kira drew of a mother and child. On the first day of school they are both surprised to find that they are in the same class. Later Rei walks in on their teacher sexually harassing Kira. Rei promises to protect Kira in exchange for a painted version of the sketch that was on the back of the map. He also offers to "lend Kira his body" and she asks him to model for her.

Aisa's Thoughts
You know how most people start off reading manga with Sailor Moon or Dragonball Z? Well mine started with Mars. I thought it was fitting that I start my reviews with this because this manga was the one that started my whole journey into my manga obsession. I do enjoy a good romance that isn't too focused on the fluffy stuff. This has a thriller, a bit of mystery, and action. The characters are relateable and they develop at a reasonable pace. I also love the psychology of it, I never thought of characters to develop or behave in such a way. You'll have to read it to see what I mean.

The art definitely develops but it's the story that captured me. The realism of the characters are so detailed it brings them to life. I could imagine how they could behave and believe the reasoning behind the choices they make. I love how the characters grow throughout the series. The flow of the story is also very nice, it's refreshing and definitely a different take on life.

Start of Comic Reviews

So I've decided that since I don't update this blog that much that I'll use it as an original comic/manga/webcomic review blog as well. I will try to review mostly independent comics but I'll probably do a fair share of published comics if they have impacted me enough.

Disclaimer
Just to let you know I'm only going to review the comics/manga I like or read. These will be my own personal opinions and thoughts on the comic so I'm open to constructive criticism but I don't want anyone flaming me. They will mostly be good reviews as I don't want to read things I don't enjoy. If this makes me small minded, well so be it. I have my thoughts and you have yours. Please just enjoy reading and don't take things too seriously. I know my grammar isn't the best but this is for fun, if you don't like it, you can leave.

Type of comics I review are usually romance, fantasy, psychological, mystery, and thriller comics. Yes, I'm a girl so I don't want gory or horror stuff so please keep this in mind when reading my blog. Although I don't think I'm that selective I am open to anything unique, colorful, or clever. Original is best for me but I'm willing to read cliched comics if they have a twist or interesting take on it.

Anyways, if you're a comic artist and would like me to review your comic feel free to shoot me an e-mail but there are no guarantees I'll actually do it. I'm kind of picky on the stories I read but if I like it then I will probably review it. Also I don't like to read strips, American-styled comics, or stories that are too abstract so please keep this in mind when sending my your comic.

OriginiquEquanimity...the start of it all...

According to Dictionary.com:

Original = capable of or given to thinking or acting in an independent, creative, or individual manner
Unique = having no like or equal; unparalleled; incomparable
Equanimity = mental or emotional stability or composure, esp. under tension or strain; calmness; equilibrium

Original + Unique + Equanimity = OriginiquEquanimity

Have you ever been called or described as "weird", "abnormal", or more degrading, "freak"? I have, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.

However, I think it's time to turn those words into a positive. What if the reason we were called weird is because we didn't go along with the rest of society because we're ORIGINAL? We are called abnormal because we think in UNIQUE ways much differently than the rest of the world. They call us a freak because we stand out and they just can't handle it.

You see, I have a thing for hoodies, I love them. I have tons in my closet and in the winter, I love to wear them. Sometimes I wear them in the summer. Does that make me a freak? Maybe. But that's something I'm proud of. They are comfortable and functional and I don't understand why more people don't wear them. That is the purpose of the last word EQUANIMITY which is that I'm content with myself. I wouldn't change that me because I'm happy with it. I'm sure there is something you have an obsession with and are perfectly happy with it. If you're happy and it isn't causing problems, then don't change it. If it is causing problems, try to find a happy medium.

There are plenty of things I would like to do and experience but until then, I'll keep the little things that make me happy. With these three words I hope to share it with the rest of the world and apply them to your everyday life. OriginiquEquanimity for your beliefs, ideas, and actions.

Until next time!
